No More Backbenchers: Kerala School’s Bold Move Inspired by Cinema

In a remarkable shift that’s gaining attention across India, a school in Kerala has declared, “No more backbenchers!” Ramavilasom Vocational Higher Secondary School (RVHSS) in Valakom, Kollam district, has reorganized its classrooms to ensure every child sits up front, literally and figuratively.

This bold change took shape after teachers watched a scene from the Malayalam film Sthanarthi Sreekuttan, where a student, tired of always being a backbencher, suggests rearranging the classroom so everyone gets a chance to participate equally. Inspired, the educators at RVHSS decided to make “no more backbenchers” their new reality.

The traditional rows of desks are gone. Instead, students now sit along the walls in a U-shape, making sure each child gets the teacher’s attention. The experiment began as a small trial in one lower primary class but quickly expanded to all lower primary classrooms when teachers noticed that “no more backbenchers” meant more confident, engaged, and enthusiastic students.

The “no more backbenchers” movement didn’t stop with just one school. The idea quickly caught on, with several schools across Kerala, and even as far as Punjab, adopting similar classroom arrangements. The term itself has become a rallying cry for more inclusive and student-centered learning environments.

Education experts have praised the shift, pointing out that it reduces the old stigma attached to sitting at the back and encourages every student to participate. While some worry about how this model will work in larger, crowded classrooms, the initial feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

Business leader Anand Mahindra was among those to celebrate the trend, calling it a simple yet powerful example of how small changes can make a big difference in education. Observers note that “no more backbenchers” echoes practices seen in progressive classrooms around the world, from Finland to Norway.

Ultimately, the “no more backbenchers” approach is about giving every child an equal chance to shine. At RVHSS and beyond, it’s a reminder that sometimes, the best lessons come from listening, and making sure every voice is heard.
